The intent of this program is to reduce social, personal and relational problems among Virgin Islands youth by equipping them to make best personal decisions through access to a free “Teen Line” phone counseling, information, and referral service.
The basic operation involves a phone center staffed by trained volunteer youth phone counselors. Key elements of a phone counseling service are anonymity, confidentiality, instant contact, a non judgmental approach, and access to information and referrals. Phone counselors are taught not to give advice or quick solutions to others problems. They are taught to listen, reflect, provide support and information and assist callers in using their own problem solving skills. Although it will only occur in a small minority of calls, phone counselors must be prepared to respond to serious crises including suicide. The volunteers will have access to more professional backup and be provided with comprehensive information and referral guides.
