Early Head Start

 The Center-Based Program

The Center-Based Program of Early Head Start operates classrooms that are developmentally appropriate.  The High Scope curriculum, also used by Head Start, follows best practices, is play-based, and focuses on each child's individual development.  Daily communication betweent he family and center staff supports the child's development and the formation of a strong parent-teacher bond.

The Home-Based Program

This porgram is home-based and focuses on encouraging and supporting each child's development in the natural environment.  A home visitor goes to the family's home on a weekly basis for approxumately 90 minutes, scheduled at convenient times for the family.  Socializations are held twice monthly to provide support and training to families.  This also allows for parents to meet and share information.

For Pregnant Women

The Pregnant Women Program is home-based, providing prenatal and postnatal supoprt as well as educational services to expectant families.  The weekly visits help to foster the understanding of prenatal and post partum development.  Good health practices are encouraged to support a healthy outcome for mother and new-born child.  Socializations are held in conjunction with the Home-Based Program to provide a sense of community and support.

Early Head Start provides care and education services for infants and toddlers, ages birth to three years old as well as to pregnant women.  The early Head Start Program has a deep commitment and concern for the entire family.

Our purpose is to partner with parents to promote the development of the total child.  We hope to accomplish this goal by providing for their cognitive, physical, creative, social and emotional needs while assisting parents in learning the skills needed to support their child's growth and development.

The Early Head Start Program works in partnership with the Department of Human Services, Department of Health, Ifnants and Toddlers, Frederiksted Health Clinic, Childsworth, VICARE, the Village, WIC, VIUCEED, VI Perinatal, and the Department of Education to provicde the best in wraparound service.

The Early Head Start Program at Queen Louise Home first opened in September 2003 to serve families determined to be at-risk for child abuse and neglect. Federally funded, the program works with 36 infants and toddlers and 12 pregnant women in center-based and home visiting settings. The Early Head Start staff provides child day care, health coordination, family education, special social services. Transportation is available and all services are free.

The Program is scheduled for an expansion in 2010 with funding from federal stimulus funds.  The expanded program will serve an additional 48 infants and toddlers in a center-based program, 12 infants and toddlers in a home-based program and 12 pregnant women.
